Interview with author J. P. Jackson

Happy Wednesday Scribblers. It’s been a devastating couple of weeks (filled with pain, anger, and hope for change). My hope is that you are taking care of yourselves. In an effort to promote positivity and to give us a short break this week I pleased to bring back fellow author and amazing friend J. P. Jackson on my Scribbles page to talk with us about what he’s been up to since the last time we chatted (you can view his last interview here) and to share some amazing news about his new audio book.

Before we jump into our conversation tell us about yourself and your writing.

That’s always such a daunting task. Who am I? I’m a 50 year old gay man, on the bearish side, married to a fantastic man for the past 22 years. I’m also Canadian (sorry), and among the many other things I can classify myself as, I have to own up to the fact that I’m a writer.

(Gasp!)

That’s always so hard for me to own.

When I do sit down and write there are a few elements that are essential.

  1. There has to be some kind of paranormal or magical element. I love urban fantasy, I love ghosts and demons and the things that go bump in the night. I guarantee every single one of my books or short stories is going to involve something fantastical.

  2. My main characters will always be LGBTQ+. Usually I write about gay men. I have an affinity for the bearish men, and for red heads, and you’ll find them predominant in my tales, but I’ve included a little bit of everybody.

  3. I typically write in the here and now. As much as I love futuristic Sci-Fi and historical Fantasy, it’s just not my jam to write, plus I don’t think I have the skills to do those genre properly.

So, there you go. Gay, bearish, magical, things with wings and tails. That’s pretty much me and what you’ll get from my stories.

What have you been up to since the last time I had you over for a sit down?

Oh goodness. Let’s see. I wrote another book, not related to either the Books of the Apocalypse or the Inner Demon series. I know my readers are hating me right now because of that. But this story just wouldn’t leave me alone.

The book is called Summoned, and it’s about Devid Khandelwal. He’s a first generation born Canadian of East Indian descent and he has a deep fascination for all things occult. But as much as he has studied and practiced runes and tarot and spirit summonings, nothing has ever happened to him that might be considered supernatural. He’s about to give it all up, but tries one last spell. Dev purchases a summoning board that grants desires and he ropes his best friend, Cameron Habersham, into performing the ritual with him.

Nothing happens, and Dev is crushed.

But then…

The desires they wished for start coming true.

Dev and Cam are plunged into the Shadow Realm and all hell breaks loose. The two find themselves in the middle of an all-male coven, who capture and victimize Fae, and who are in a generations long feud with the local werewolf pack.

Needless to say, Dev begins to regret his involvement in the occult and the old saying “be careful what you wish for”, is suddenly a very real consideration.

That book got signed to contract with NineStar Press and should be out later this year, or early 2021.

Then I also had Magic or Die made into an Audiobook and that released last month. So far the sales are doing pretty well – the narrator was fantastic – and I had a video book trailer made to advertise the release of the audiobook, and did a week long Facebook blitz too.

I know you and I have chatted several times about writing; more specifically writing Queer Novels that aren’t romance, care to share some of your thoughts on the subject? What have your learned? What do readers need to understand about writing non romance LGBTQIA+ books, that they might not fully understand now (don’t be preachy here, keep it conversational).

This is something that STILL drives me insane.

So, for anyone reading – LGBTQ+ Fiction DOES NOT HAVE TO HAVE SEX IN IT TO MAKE IT QUEER FICTION.

Repeat that for me. Say it louder for the folks in the back.

Simply having your characters identify within the queer community is enough. The story may not revolve around relationships or sex in any way shape or form. I think the content of any story is dictated by the motivations of the character, and the situation they find themselves in. In my first book, Daimonion, the world has just started the beginning of the Apocalypse. It’s not exactly the right moment for sexy fun. In Magic or Die, there is the beginning of a relationship between one of the adult ‘students’ of the Center for Magical Research and Development, and the ‘teacher’ or ‘coach’ of the group. But the two involved talk about how inappropriate it is to act on their attraction for each other. I mean they eventually throw all caution out the window, but that has ramifications. Either way, neither of these two books have any content that I would consider to be sex. Sexual tension? Sure. Off page sex references? Absolutely – but that’s what the story demanded.

Now, Summoned, that’s a bit of a different beast. The world of Male Witches in this tale is hyper sexualized, and so there is graphic sex depicted in the novel.

I didn’t really want to go down that route – I didn’t want to be another M/M Romance author. But at the same time, I was curious to see if this kind of story would sell better than the first two. So, as much as writing Summoned stretched my comfort zones and my writing skills (writing sex isn’t easy, and writing good and accurate sex scenes is even harder (all the puns intended)), it’s also an experiment to see what sells.

I have to ask, so this new book, Summoned, is an experiment for you and your writing, does this mean if you sell more of the romance story then the Urban Fantasy that you are going to move into the romance field and give up Urban Fantasy? Will J.P. Jackson become the next Nora Roberts or Nicholas Sparks?

HAHAHAHA!

OMG if only - Nora Roberts.

So here's the fun thing - I started out with Summoned trying to write an M/M Paranormal Romance - and to be honest, I think it ended up being a sexy Urban Fantasy story that has graphic sex. I'm not sure I would call it a Romance in any way. Others may disagree.

But, if it is successful - more than the other books, will I start writing more stories like this?

Probably not.

Books of the Apocalypse have three books planned out - it's a trilogy. I have no desire to include sex in any of them

Inner Demons series has five books planned - and James and Isaiah will continue their relationship throughout the series, but will we get to see them get down and dirty? Probably not - it's not what this set of books are about.

Magus Malefica series - the book that Summoned is from - could have as many as thirteen books, each stand-alone, with repeating characters from the other stories. This series will have sex.

Other books? Probably not. Maybe? But will sex and romance be the only thing I write?  No.

I think it will depend on the story.

What was is like working on creating an audio book for Magic or Die?

MagicorDie-Audiobook.jpg

The process was really interesting.

I have to say, I feel very fortunate that my publishing house is able and willing to assist its authors in getting their books formatted into an audiobook. I can’t imagine trying to do this on my own.

It has been two years since Magic or Die was published, so I had to go back and re-examine my work and that alone was an intellectual exercise. I had to create some documents that would give potential narrators a feel for the characters in the book. Who they were, what they looked like, and how I felt their voice might be portrayed. All of this work made me reevaluate the writing and my characters, and I was often surprised at my writing. After a two year break from the storyline, I had forgotten a lot of details. It was fun to go back and visit this project.

After this step was completed, I had to put together a quick script. A scene that had a good selection of characters speaking so that potential narrators had something to work from, and could audition with.

Then, the script and character sheets were posted (again, thanks to NineStar), and we waited for narrators to audition. I was fortunate that I had a couple who were interested. After listening to their reads of the script I had prepared, there was one that clearly felt ‘right’. Robbie Molinari’s (find Robbie here) voices and tone were perfect.

Robbie was then sent the offer to produce the book. He sent a sample back, reading the first few chapters. The content was fantastic.

When he was done narrating the book, I sat down with my own book in hand, and listened to Robbie as he narrated Magic or Die, following along in my book. If I came across a mistake, it was noted. Mistakes were sent off to him, they were corrected and then the entire book was uploaded to the Audible website.

One month later – 43 downloads! WOOHOO!

Now, I also know, you were busy creating a book trailer as well. Tell us about that process?

I thought it might be a good idea to advertise the release of the audiobook, as no one would even know about it otherwise. So I contacted Baz Collins (learn more about Baz and Akwekon Media here) – a fellow author from NineStar – and a media whiz, and asked him if he could create a video book trailer. He had done some in the past which I thought were stunning.

Baz and I worked together. I sent him the same character tip sheet that I sent off to the Narrator, along with a couple lines about the plot of the book, something that would ‘hook’ the readers, or make the project sound really interesting.

From there, Baz found stock images for the various characters, overlaid a number of effects with a perfectly paired soundtrack, and from all that work, he created a fantastic trailer!

Click here for the link – go watch – Baz did an incredible job.

Tell me, if there was one thing you would like readers to take away about your writing, what would it be?

Being Urban Fantasy, the stories are meant to be fantastical. To make the unreal, real. So I would hope that readers get lost in the stories and immersed in a world full of magic and possibilities.

But each book has its own theme or dilemma. So there’ll be lessons in each book, or takeaways, or things that I hope will make readers ponder and question. For instance, Magic or Die is about dealing with your own Inner Demons, and in fact, that’s the name of the series. Perhaps readers will self examine their own monsters and come to terms with them

The last thing I want, is for members of the LGBTQ+ community to have stories where they can see themselves being the hero. So often, we’ve had to fight, and fight hard in order to have the same things as our heterosexual friends and family. It’s nice to see ourselves depicted in fiction in positive ways.

Lastly, I want others who are not part of the LGBTQ+ community to see that we can be the heroes too. Members of our community are strong, smart, capable, reliable, clever, resilient, and creative. We are just as capable of fighting off the monster, defeating the villain and overcoming our own faults to be a character to look up to and strive to be.

How are your Demons treating you? What about your African Violets?

My demons are always tormenting me. They do it for fun. Sometimes they come for snuggles and pets, other times it’s to claw, bite, and scratch. They are unusual beasties, but I love them.

The violets are great right now! I have about 200 seedlings slowly growing, and a couple of seed pods ripening on some plants. New violets are on the way!

What else do you have coming up? What are you working on?

I’m really focusing on finishing the second book of the Inner Demons series – that’s the next book after Magic or Die.  It’s called Blood and Sacrifice and it’s all about dealing with James’ sister, Shauna and her use of Blood Magic. There are ghosts, zombies, vampires, siphons, and a whole new brand of magic that has a Voudon feel to it.

Then I have a couple of short stories I need to write – ideas that have come to me.

And then it’s time to start cracking down on Nephilim – Book Two of the Apocalypse. I’m equally terrified and excited to be continuing this project, and it’s long overdue.

***

I want to extend a big thanks to J.P. Jackson for stopping by and chatting with us today. if you like it a little creepy and dark then I absolutely recommend that you go out and pick up a copy of Magic or Die and listen to chilling tale. Until next time I hope you stay safe and have a great week.

About J.P. Jackson

Me at the Writing Desk.jpg

J.P. Jackson works as an IT analyst in health care during the day, where if cornered he’d confess to casting spells to ensure clinicians actually use the electronic medical charting system he configures and implements.

At night however, the writing happens, where demons, witches and shape shifters congregate around the kitchen table and general chaos ensues. The insurance company refuses to accept any more claims of ‘acts of the un-god’, and his husband of almost 20 years has very firmly put his foot down on any further wraith summoning’s in the basement. And apparently imps aren’t house-trainable. Occasionally the odd ghost or member of the Fae community stops in for a glass of wine and stories are exchanged. Although the husband doesn’t know it, the two Chihuahuas are in cahoots with the spell casting.

J.P.’s other hobbies include hybridizing African Violets (thanks to grandma), extensive travelling and believe it or not, knitting.

Interview with author J. P. Jackson

Happy Wednesday Scribblers. This week I’m thrilled to have fellow author and all around amazing guy J. P. Jackson back on my Scribbles page to talk with us about his newest novel Magic of Die. I finished reading Magic or Die over the holiday and I have to say, it was amazing. I loved it and I can’t wait for the next novel in the series to come out. If you want to read my review you can find it here.

Welcome back J.P. It’s great to have you back.

Thank you for having me.

Of course, now why don’t you tell us a little about yourself and your writing? Since you’ve been here before why don’t you tell us something not in your bio.

I’m claustrophobic. I actually never knew until a few years ago. I ended up in the last row of a minivan getting a ride from the Car Dealership to work, and within a few minutes there was this overwhelming sense that the metal around me was squeezing in. I started to imagine all sorts of horrid things, and I was convinced the van was going to end up in some sort of collision, where I would be stuck, compressed by steel on all sides, slowly suffocating, and help wouldn’t arrive on time.

Worst 20 minutes of my life.

Update: That feeling has returned now several times, whenever I’m in small tight spaces. So I avoid them like the plague.

I like to try and channel some of that emotion into my writing!

I can’t imagine, at least you found a way to channel those feelings. What got you involved in writing? Why did you pick demons and all things dark as your vehicle for story telling?

I think I’ve always had stories running around in my head…and I love to read. Eventually I thought, “Why can’t I write the stories?” It was also a bucket list item for me to be published, so I set out to achieve that.

As for my demons…how could you not love them? They’re just misunderstood monsters waiting for the right person to love them and care for them. LOL. I don’t know why I went ‘dark’, but I’ve always had a little evil streak in me, and that naturally fell out onto the pages of my tales (or should I say tails?). It’s funny, I don’t think my writing is all that dark, and yet I keep getting told, “wow, that was creepy.” So, hey, I say go with it. Plus I find some measure of beauty in the darkness…

I can see that in your writing you do an amazing job painting a beautiful picture with your words. It’s very impressive. Okay, now tell us about Magic or Die.

MagicorDie-f500.jpg

Magic or Die started out as a short story that my editor wanted me to write for another project. Before I knew it, I had a full-fledged novel on my hands.

The story revolves around James Martin – an extremely powerful empath who is forced into completing the last year of his contract with a facility called the CMRD. James is broken, on many levels, and although he’s a good guy, he doesn’t always make the best decisions.

James’s job is to help five people, all in their early twenties, find a degree of control over their lethal supernatural abilities.

Problem is, if they can’t get their talents under control, the CMRD will euthanize them.

It’s a story about survival, and learning how to work as part of a team.

I know you had to do a lot of research. Did you find any of it creeping you out to the point where you said, “Okay that is too much and goes to far even for me?”

To be honest – I didn’t do that much research.

Seriously? Wow. Care to share?

Magic comes naturally to me, I see it everywhere, and I might be a fairly well-versed pagan (wink, wink, nudge, nudge). So understanding elements, colours and their meaning, herbology, minerology, affinities etc., is second nature. There’s definitely a few things I had to flip through my books to remind myself on, or get some unusual correlations put together, and there’s a few websites I like and trust for their content…but did any one thing lead me to the darkest realms of the internet?

No – not really. I’ll tell you a secret though…

I can’t watch horror movies.

They’ll keep me awake for weeks. I’m too sensitive and impressionable. My mind takes things I’ve seen and twists them even further.

I’ll let you in on another secret…

I’ve had people tell me, “OMG, thank you for scaring the crap out of me! What is wrong with you and your brain?” And, I’ve had others say, “Well, that’s not that scary!”

So, one person’s eternal nightmare is another’s stroll through the garden of souls. It’s really subjective.

That is certainly one way to put it. I’ve got to ask, who is your favorite character? I know there are so many to pick from but do you have one? If so can you share?

In Magic or Die? Oooh, tough choice. That’s like asking a parent which one of their children is the favorite!

I suppose Annabelle holds a little place in my heart. She’s so small and tiny, but has not yet come to terms with how powerful and capable she really is. She lacks the confidence to master the demons within her. She’ll find her way, but it might take a little bit of a journey to get there.

But I wrote the entire book with Isaiah in mind. I wanted a little bit more of a romance than my first book, Daimonion, and so for me, Isaiah is my fantasy hunk. I find it interesting that different people have pictured Isaiah differently than me – and he is often people’s favorite – but not always. I like the fact that Isaiah is capable of doing any kind of magic possible, but he’s going to have problems when his demon starts making demands of him that will test his comfort zones.

Definitely something to look forward in the next novel. I know I was surprised at the request of Isaiah’s demon. I’m very curious at how that is going to get worked out. So no spoilers lets move on. I know you’re working on a sequel, but I’m curious how many books do you plan for the series?

I’d like to write five books in this series. One for each of the students and their journey. It’s going to be a bit of a challenge though because at different points in time, the characters will be pulled away from each other.

Five books from each students POV that would be cool to read and I can see how you set it up based on what the first book. I wish you luck. That is going to be a lot of work.

You’re telling me.

I want to ask about a rather difficult topic. You wrote a Dark Urban Fantasy book in the MM genre and there is next to no sex, which I think is excellent, LGBTQIA+ don’t and should not have to contain sex in them to sell, however are you worried that there is an expectation in the market for MM books to have explicit sex? And are you worried that it will affect your sales? In your opinion what can we as authors do to change this stereo type? Also, do you think there is a role that the publishers should be taking to address this issue?

The expectation that any LGBTQ+ fiction must contain romance or sex is sickeningly prevalent, and I’m so tired of it. Honestly. My characters might have sex, but nine times out of ten I’m not going to write about it. If that’s what you want, then I’ll suggest some really good M/M Romance authors. I write fiction. Paranormal and Urban Fantasy fiction. It. Does. Not. Have. To. Contain. Sex.

Period.

100% Agree. Nicely said. I wish more people would understand this and talk about it.

Am I worried about sales? Sure I am. I’ve already seen where the expectation for that kind of a story has deterred folks from purchasing my books. But, in all honesty, if that’s the kind of read they were looking for, they would have ended up disappointed in my work – so, I prefer to market my stuff to anyone who’s interested in a really good dark story.

I think authors who write queer fiction should market their books in the realms where they fit. Did you write a western about a gay cowboy who inherited land and has to ‘settle the west’? Great! Market that to folks who like reading Westerns. Did you write an epic alien saga that features invading non-binary humanoids from another planet? Then sell it to Sci-Fi fans.

Get my point?

Absolutely.

I don’t think that queer literature has to be marketed to Romance readers just because they might be more accepting of the queer content. It’s almost as if we’re closeting ourselves by only focusing in on an audience that is looking for gay content. The problem is – that’s not our market.

Half of my beta readers do not identify as part of the Rainbow Tribe. And, in fact, a lot of the readers I’ve connected with do not either. The people who are reading my books are folks who like Paranormal/Urban Fantasy stories.

We need to be brave and force our marketing companies and publishers to flog our works into more mainstream areas. More and more, queer content isn’t an issue for non-queer folk. Anyone will read it.

Now having said that, we don’t want to forget about our communities either – one of the reasons I started writing was to put creepy queer stories on the shelves in hopes that someone from the Rainbow Tribe would pick up one of my books and say, “Yes! That’s me! I’m in this book!”

So we can’t forget about where we came from, or who we represent, but we shouldn’t limit ourselves to that either.

Thank you. I’m so glad you shared that. I couldn’t have said it any better myself. Okay, let’s change subjects here. When you’re not writing and reading what do you enjoy doing?

I read a lot. Anywhere from 30 – 50 books a year. I’m also learning to enjoy exercise. LOL. I’m in my last year of my forties and keeping the weight off and getting in better shape has really become a focus. I’d like to be more muscle bear than bear. Beyond that, I love watching movies with my husband, and finding new restaurants to enjoy. We both love to travel, and when I have time, I also like horticulture and gaming (my PS4 is sadly neglected). My spare time is really limited.

Oh, I’m sure. Time always seems to be at a premium these days. So then, what’s coming up next? What other books do you have out that we need to check out?

This year I’m really putting an emphasis on creating content instead of watching other people’s works. I hope to be able to bang out two books, both sequels – one to Magic or Die, and I already have about 10 chapters of that written. It’s tentatively called Blood Rites and Sacrifice. And then I need to get book two of the apocalypse written as well. It will be called Nephalem. I’d definitely suggest people read Daimonion. One reader described it as the TV show Supernatural, but from the demon’s perspective…if the demon was gay. I love this. A lot.

I’m toying with writing a Paranormal Romance as well – but again, darkly interwoven into the shadows – hexes and demonic contracts and unearthly creatures…but instead of a waifish pasty near-dead main character (as is often the case), I want to write it from the perspective of a gruff guy. A bear, like me, but really tough around the edges who ends up being a witch. Sounds like fun, right?

I think I might also try out sketching some of my characters. I used to be able to draw, but I haven’t used those skills in years.

I might also have to get my profile pictures updated…hmmm….

There is nothing like a good well taken photo and I’m sure whatever you come up with will be amazing. Anything else you want to share with us?

You know I love it when I hear from my readers. Make sure you hit me up on my Twitter, Facebook, Instagram or Goodreads profiles. I’d love to hear who your favorite characters are, and why, and what you think might happen next!

I want to thank author J. P. Jackson for stopping by my Scribble page and chatting with us for a while. Until next time have a great week everyone. Happy New Year!

Call Back

“YES, MIRIAM. YES, I know. I know it’s been over a year. I’m not sure I’m ready.”

The knuckles on my hand cramped from clasping my cell phone in a death grip. I glanced at my watch. This conversation had gone on too long. In the span of two minutes Miriam had managed to exhume memories and history I wanted buried and forgotten. I sucked in a short breath as nausea surged like a tsunami of fear. Its behemoth wave washed bile up against the back of my throat.

I slumped down the stained and weathered wall of the coffin-sized studio apartment I reluctantly called a home. It wasn’t that bad a place to live, except for the cockroaches I found on a daily basis. I’m sure they considered it a veritable paradise. Absentmindedly, I toed an old pizza box near my foot while listening to Miriam. One of the insects scampered across the matted Berber carpet.

Gross.

Cody. A pale ghostlike face flashed before me. His hair, the exact colour of fall fallowed fields, hung listlessly over one eye, as blood trickled out of the corner of his mouth. His chapped lips parting, asking me, “Why?”

I ignored the vision. Well, ignored wasn’t the right word, more like boxed it up with a heavy rock and pitched it into the abyss of my mind with all the other terrifying nightmares.

“I know. I owe you, yes. I’m just not sure—” I crawled over to the upended crate being used as a coffee table, reaching for my last pack of smokes. I lit one, enjoyed the soothing crackle of the tobacco as it ignited, and then inhaled deeply.

Ah, yes. Hello, nicotine, my demon friend.

Miriam continued blithering while I halfheartedly listened to her soul-sucking voice. She was demanding my presence.

“What? You mean, tomorrow? Miriam, I really don’t think it’s a good idea.” I drew in another steady stream of the toxic smoke. It burned my lungs as the addictive chemicals flooded through my body. I really need to quit. Scraping together the smallest ounce of courage, I attempted to defy her. “No, really I can’t.”

A wraithlike hand, desiccated and fragile, inched its way across my shoulder and gripped my tense neck muscle. Its sharp nails dug into my flesh. Its bite, a warning.

Cody’s lifeless lips brushed my ear, sending cold shivers skittering across my back. Eruptions of goose flesh covered my neck and shoulders. His voice, a memory and a sound I would never forget, was long gone.

“Don’t do this. You’ll kill me again.” His icy breath whispered to me.

Another box, a bigger rock, another addition to the pit of despair in my head.

“No,” I replied to one of Miriam’s inane questions. “There’s an Arcane too? I’ve never been good with them. They creep me out. No, I don’t think I’ve ever seen that. Shit, really?” Miriam had just described a scene for me. My flesh turned buggy, as if I had chiggers nesting and burrowing deep into my skin. “Oh god that’s gross. That’s also not good.” I pointed uselessly at the wall, waving my finger, trying to make a point to the caller. “I never took the exam for the third class, you know that.” Miriam had asked if I’d kept up my licensing. I instantly felt guilty. I should have done that years ago. One thing was becoming evident from the conversation—she needed my help. Help only I could give.

“Alright, maybe, I think I can. Consult only. Do you hear me, Miriam? Just a consult.” I had tried desperately to stay the hell out of this. I wasn’t ready. I couldn’t do this. “What time? Yes. I’m pretty sure. Miriam—” A thousand reservations ran through my mind, a wild stampede, unbridled, laced with dread and fear. “How many? How many in this class?”

The question sat on me like the world perched on my shoulders. The higher the number, the bigger the world, the more responsibility, an undeniable possibility of…

“Five! Are you kidding me? I can’t do five. No. No! It’s not possible.”

She was out of her mind.

“Yes, my sister is still on the streets. You know that’s close to blackmail, right?” I stamped out the cigarette. The lacquer of smoke in my mouth tasted like I had just licked the bottom of an ashtray. Why do I smoke again? It was suddenly very hard to breathe.

“Fine. Tomorrow. Yes. Ten a.m. Yes, I’ll be there. What do you mean dress appropriately?”

I looked at my cell, disgusted as the call ended.

I flipped the device onto the floor as if it had burst into flame and branded the conversation into my hand. I snorted.

Like, I’ll forget.

Reaching around to the other side of the crate, I grabbed blindly for a bottle I hoped was there. By all the gods’ great divine gifts, it was. And it still had liquid in it. In fact, it was surprisingly half-full.

Bonus.

I tipped the vodka bottle back, allowing its burn to strip away the cancer stick’s carcinogenic treatment in my mouth.

Swaying back and forth with my eyes closed, I tried to drown out the endless voices in my head. The words inundated my impending thoughts of doom and failure, and I could feel the chaos and panic mounting. Steadying myself and regaining my mental capacities, I gazed out the window. It was dark already and only six, early evening at best. Yeah for daylight-savings time and late fall in Canada. Lights from the downtown cityscape lazily twinkled and danced before me. It should have been a pretty sight, but the darkness always seemed too oppressive, like a shroud. And I knew better. Things lived in the shadows.

I took another swig from the clear glass bottle. The burn hit the back of my throat and disintegrated the bile that had crept up there.

Five very gifted students.

I rubbed the stubble covering my face and took yet another nip. Except it wasn’t a quick sip, it was a good one. A long one.

The window suddenly acted like a mirror, and my own image reflected against the backdrop of the city skyline. I looked like shit. My short brown hair had cowlicks; thank god I kept it close. But the rest? No wonder Miriam instructed me to clean it up. The shirt I was sort of wearing was only half buttoned and stained in several spots. I had no pants on, but the pair of tighty-whities, which weren’t exactly white anymore, or tight, were ripped and showed more flesh than they were supposed to. Jesus.

How did my life get here?

Five young people had no control of their gifts.

And I had a sister who was lost out in the sparkle-light of downtown’s darkness, up to who knew what, and doing it with god only knew who, mired in her own addictions.

I glanced around my shit-hole apartment.

What the fuck am I going to do?

Meet the Author

JP-Jackson-1200x1598.jpg

Author Shout Outs

Happy Wednesday fellow Scribblers. This week I wanted to do some shout outs to follow Author:  J. Scott Coatsworth and J.P. Jackson, both books deal with magic in unique ways.

J. Scott Coatsworth has just released of his new book The River City Chronicles.  There are three things that excite me about this new novel.  First, it has magic in it. Second, it takes place in Sacramento, CA, which is just two hours from where I live.  I’m very familiar with the area and I can’t wait to see how Scott weaves the story in and around our state capital. Third, it was the number one Gay Book for it's release week. You know it’s gonna be amazing and it should be a lot of fun to read.

I love Scott’s writing and I can’t wait to get my copy.

Here is the blurb:

James Martin is a teacher, a powerful Psychic, and an alcoholic. He used to work for the Center for Magical Research and Development, a facility that houses people who can’t control their supernatural abilities, but left after one of his students was killed, turning to vodka to soothe his emotional pain. The problem is he still has one year left on his contract.

When James returns to the CMRD to fulfill the rest of his contract, he finds himself confronting the demons of his past and attempting to protect his new class from a possible death sentence, because if they don’t pass their final exams, they’ll be euthanized.

James also discovers that his class isn’t bringing in enough sponsors, the agencies and world governments who supply grants and ultimately purchase graduates of the CMRD, and that means no profit for the facility. James and his students face impossible odds—measure up to the facility’s unreachable standards or escape.
